Phantom: Requiem For the Phantom (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

A young man with no memories fights to salvage his humanity when he’s forced into a life of murder by a dangerous crime syndicate called Inferno. The organization gives him a new name, Zwei, and molds him into a perfect killing machine, a meticulous instrument of death created to obey his masters’ every deadly command. Zwei’s not the only puppet controlled by Inferno; Ein is a girl as beautiful as she is brutal, as lethal as she is lost. While mafia violence escalates around them, the two assassins grow closer, and Zwei begins the struggle to reclaim his past and save Ein from a blood-soaked future.

Phantom: Requiem For the Phantom (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
Review by J. C. Kinder : A mediocre show, sad to say 3 Star

Phantom is an excellent example of trying too hard. Occasionally it achieves greatness, but more often it simply collapses. The basic plot is that the protagonists are brainwashed into becoming elite assassins for a powerful organized crime group. It combines philosophical questions about identity and juxtaposes it with some quite decent action scenes. The art is variable, swinging from meh to reasonably good without ever really hitting a huge high or low. I suppose my biggest problem is that its all so damn cliche. You know, with an absolute certainty, how this story will end before the first episode finishes. Whole chunks of Crying Freeman are cut and pasted into this series, without the same quality of art. (Clarification- the art in the Crying Freeman manga, not anime. The anime art was terrible, and the art in Phantom is never that bad.) There are some interesting characters who you do come to care about. There is some decent storytelling here, noir tropes presented without too much embellishment. Balancing that are characters who are just appalling. Picking one at random- the boss of Inferno, who is clearly meant to be the villain in some swords and sorcery story. If you really, REALLY liked Noir and are desperate for a new fix, this may be for you. Credit where it's due, the series held my attention enough that I watched it all the way through. That being said, Phantom is mediocre. There is better stuff out there..
